SMC Descending Rings (A.K.A. Rap Rings) are a one-piece aluminum ring which are intended to be placed at the top of a pull down rappel in place of a carabiner in order to facilitate recovery of ropes. Low cost means you don’t have to think twice if the situation requires leaving the D-Ring behind. In addition, descending rings are often used creatively in various rescue rigging applications and are important components in the manufacture of many different types of climbing and rescue harnesses.

SMC Descending Rings are manufactured from a single piece of aircraft quality aluminum in order to insure consistent quality, durability and maximum reliability.

I've heard that these thing can wear through and either break or cut your rope.

Yep. They will. It's critically important that you inspect them closely each time you thread your rope through them and always carry a spare or two to replace worn ones. (Hint: If the rap rings are worn there's a likelyhood that the webbing is toast as well.) Please don't just add a new rap ring to an anchor with a stack of worn rings. Take the worn ones off and recycle them when when you get home. Junk is junk and this particular junk could cut your rope.
