SMC Oval

The SMC oval was one of the first aluminum carabiners manufactured in the US in the 1960s. It is a classic traditional carabiner, a highly versatile and functional design that has stood the test of time. A major benefit of using a "true" oval carabiner is that it is very difficult to load incorrectly and the forces tend to "self-equalize" between the pulley and other equipment, ropes and anchors. Balancing the load equally on the spine and the gate allows the carabiner to maintain full strength under a variety of conditions. Ovals are most often used in critical climbing or rescue applications where a stuck gate must be avoided, and then they are always used as pairs, rigged opposite/opposed. Doing so the paired ovals may in effect serve as a locking carabiner when one is not available. The frame is slightly flattened for increased strength. Sharp edges resulting from machining operations have been heavily radiused to help protect rope and webbing from abrasion.
